D. and I went to music class and then out to lunch with our music class friends which was fun. By the time we got home, it was time for nap time and then I had to wake D. up from nap to go get I. from school. A surprisingly fast day though I did get a lot done, some laundry, making I.'s and D.'s breakfasts plus I.'s lunch, and fitting in 30 minutes of hard exercise. My goal this fall is to fit in 3-30 minute home sessions of exercise during the week to supplement my weekend workouts. This week will be one trying to find balance between fun/leisure and getting things done both when I. is in school and when she is out of school.

First Day of First Grade
I'm happy and relieved to say that I. had a great first day. This morning she was still lamenting not getting to play with D. but when I picked her up, she ran over with a big smile and kisses for both of us, D. first of course. She loved her day and today was pretty much learning rules and figuring out where the kids' learning levels were at. I think she's going to rock it this year. Her teacher and I have already talked twice about her advanced levels in math and reading so I feel good that we are on the same page - she doesn't need extra homework or more homework, she just needs challenging homework. This is one of the big reasons why we are sending I. to private school and making the investment. If she was in public school, there would be around 33 kids in her first grade class, hers has 18. She was in such a good mood and couldn't wait for tomorrow to head back to school.

Last Day of Preschool
Today is my baby girl's last day of preschool...ever. Last year was tempered by the fact that she was going to preschool one more year. But this year, this is it. Thank God her kindergarten is only for 4 hours instead of the normal 6+ or I'd be in tears already. Still, school from this point on until college will be an every day event and the time of having full days to ourselves during the week will be gone. Hopefully I can hold it together this afternoon when all us mommas pile in to class 15 minutes early for the end of the year send-off.
On Monday we took a school friend of I.'s and her mom to Legoland with us using some free passes we had. I. had a good time hanging out with her friend and it definitely helped with some of the long lines we encountered. The mom is actually one of the few people I've met in the last year or two that I feel comfortable with and believe it or not, we talked the whole time about a bunch of different stuff. I know, I was amazed at that myself when I thought back on the day. By the time I got I. in bed, I wasn't feeling all that great - it was physically a long day and I definitely felt the toll of it. But it was worth it and I'm glad we got to go before summer vacation started.
This week is full of prep work for our vacation next week in Palm Desert. I'm excited to be going and hoping that it will be a nice, relaxing family hibernation time and that V. will get enough rest to help with I. when her sisters aren't there. The last couple of weekends, he really has been spending some good time with her one on one and I'm hoping that it will continue through next week. I don't know if this improvement is due to the warning I gave him a few weeks ago about the fact that on the weekends once the baby comes, he's going to have to step up on the help front. It's going to be difficult enough for the weekdays to be 2 on 1 for me; if the weekends start feeling that way, there's going to be serious problems. That's why I issued the warning ahead of time. The girls will be coming out for the last 3-4 days of the vacation (I think). I had to make sure I told V. so that he can warn the girls that I will NOT be sleeping on the pull-out couch in the living room this year. I need a bed, a real bed to sleep in this year so they will not be able to hibernate in the king size bed(room) until 9:30/10 every morning. They may have to get up at the unearthly time of 8am. I just want to make sure everyone is on the same page before we get out there.
Reading this over with all these warnings being issued, I kind of sound bitchy. Really though it's a function of being at a point where I need some of that leeway and special treatment afforded to others. I don't really get it offered to me so I have to assertively take it myself.
Going to "talk" (more like listen) to my mom today. We'll see if anything is said about Father's Day plans/the letter I wrote.

Week Itinerary
I can't believe it's already Wednesday - this week has gone by so quickly. V. has been on furlough (translation: no pay) this week but he's gone so much that I'll take him however I can get him even if it means minus a paycheck.
We've had some fun since the disastrous Labor Day horse races on Monday and got some necessary things taken care of too. A good week for balance.
Tuesday we kicked things off with I.'s first day of preschool (2.5 hrs.) and then straight to my therapist appointment. First one without I. in awhile and since V. was home, he got dragged there for a joint session. With all the time we spend apart and the parenting challenges of the last three months, we needed to go. Even though it was like pulling teeth at times, we walked out feeling better and I have been able to see the benefits of the visit. I've been giving room to him and I. and he's been taking a step forward with her and it's been really good. I just wish he was here more so that we could continue this forward momentum. I should mention that we had about 45 minutes before we had to pick up I. from preschool when we got out of session. Not really enough time to go home and relax so V. suggested we head to El Torito for Happy Hour because they start at 2pm. Pretty pathetic! First I scoffed, then I said we don't have enough time to get to the Mira Mesa one, and then I said, "Oh, but wait - there's one in RB right off the freeway." Didn't take much convincing, I'm ashamed to say. So off we headed for happy hour margaritas. Talk about doing something completely out of the norm! I'd like to say I was ashamed of myself as I pulled into the parking lot to pick up I. from the first day of her preschool, which just happens to be affiliated with a church. You'd never guess I graduated from a Christian high school, huh? Let me just say that if you went to a Christian high school, you probably wouldn't be that surprised.
Today was the gym for my Wednesday morning phone conversation with my mom (and dad this week) and then off to take I. to school. V. and I did a couple of errands together (another oddity), relaxed, and then he went to get I. from school while I cleaned the cat room and went to the chiropractor. We had a BBQ dinner outside on the patio today while enjoying the fall-ish weather. I really loved today's weather.
Tomorrow, I'm playing it by ear once we take I. to school. Today was a boring post but I wanted to document my odd week of sorts. Friday we leave for Vegas so that I can have my official time off work and I'm looking forward to it!

Lessons Learned
Here are the lessons I've learned from the first semi-week of I.'s school:
1. I still enjoy my alone time.
Did I miss I. terribly? Yes. But did I REALLY enjoy the alone time I had? Absolutely! Whether it was relaxing, talking on the phone, reading, doing grocery shopping or things around the house, I had the freedom to do what I wanted to/needed to in whatever order I wished without a questionner in the backseat. I am already planning social and personal things weeks in advance. It's been almost 4 years since I have been able to do this!
2. This time apart reenergizes me and makes me appreciate I.'s and my time together.
I guess this is one of those situations where "you don't know what you've got until it's gone" kind of things. But today after 2 days of school, I was looking forward to enjoying time with I., just the 2 of us. If it was up to I., she would be going to school every day, that's how much she loves it, which is good news and bad news for me, the momma. But today, we had a leisurely morning, did some work around the house, went to our pool, and then to a playdate for I. that also included a much needed massage for me. I really enjoyed the time we played and spent together and I. did too so maybe school is helping with taking each other for granted.
3. Pre-school is exactly what I. needs right now.
She is ready and excited and that is how I want her to approach school. I want so much for her to be confident, strong and able to handle all the cruelties that school brings. I know, I shouldn't be so negative but I know how little girls are already at this age. I talked with her the night before school that somebody may be mean to her (something she has never experienced thus far in her 3.5 years) and how she just needs to walk away and find the children that are kind to her. It breaks my heart to have to say this to her but better she is prepared that it may happen than not be prepared and be totally shocked at school.

I.'s First Day of Preschool
So, surprise, surprise, I made it through today without any tears. I. was so jazzed about school this morning that I couldn't help but get caught up in it. Here's I. waiting for us to take her to school:

When we went to leave, she gave me a hug and a big smile and pushed V. out of the room so I guess I did my job well.

I picked her up in a blink of the eye and she loved school as I knew she would. She had so much to talk about, all the new experiences, and when we read about all the fun things happening in the upcoming weeks, she was so excited that she gave me a hug. The most amazing thing to me, the person who has had to suffer through the painful potty training process of the last 3 months, I. STAYED DRY THE WHOLE AFTERNOON! I was hoping that would be the case but didn't think it would actually occur. I keep my fingers crossed that this wasn't just a first day fluke!
