Easy Decision

I met with the other doula this morning, a very nice lady who seemed to be experienced and competent. It was funny though, I almost immediately knew when I met with her that I would go with the first one. It was one of those intuitive feelings where you just know right off the bat what is right and then it's later when you start putting little things together that you realize why you knew. I don't want to say what wasn't right with the second doula because it wasn't really that she wasn't right. It was that she made me immediately see why the other one was righter. The grammar in this post is pretty atrocious but these made up words communicate things better.

Yesterday, when I saw the first doula, I felt calm. She was visibly soothing to me. Weird, huh? It's hard to explain but like I said yesterday, she had this calm, peaceful aura about her even before she spoke. She offered to buy me a beverage at Starbucks (where we met) which was nice and she complimented me on how well I looked for being almost 10 weeks along. Since right now I don't look particularly pregnant, just bulky and thick, I really appreciated that and it made me feel proud of myself. And you know, that's part of a doula's job in the thick of things - to make you have pride and feel confidence in yourself that you can do this labor thing. So it gave me a little sneak peek.

Another thing was that she only takes on one mother a month. Today's doula takes on four a month and talked about "building her business". Now I understand that this is her business and that's fine with me. But when the other one was talking, I could feel that she wasn't in it as a business (obviously not if you only take one person a month). She was it because she loved it and felt it was her life's calling/work. Her face and tone of voice radiated this and I just felt a warmth when she spoke about it.

Now, am I going to tell V. all of these warm fuzzy feelings that went into this decision? Absolutely not. Oh my gosh, he would probably go into convulsions and never recover. I mean, trust me, I've been through labor before and even with this doula, I'm not picturing that it's going to be some big long kumbaya moment. But if I was to tell V. all of this, that's what he would picture and be dreading it. For all his teasing, he is fine with it. He knows I'm not really good about asking for help and that if I think this will help, it must be worthwhile. He also knows that I don't make decisions lightly nor do I spend hundreds of dollars without a really good reason based on research, pros and cons, and my gut instinct. It's maybe once a year or every two years that I announce a big ticket purchase and believe me, I have the list of reasons why we should. Not that he requires that of me but that's how both of our minds work and it saves lots and lots of "should we? shouldn't we?" conversations that neither of us has the words left over for and energy to participate in. We both just like to cut to the chase and move on.

How this turned into a dissection of our marital decision making, I'm not sure. Before I get going on some other tangent, I'm going to stop so I can relax my brain and head to bed. After my bowl of cereal with berries of course...I'm embarrassed to tell you how much I look forward to it. When V.'s not here, it's almost the highlight of my evenings. So pathetic!

Random Wednesday Morning Thoughts

Yesterday turned out to be a good day, an exceptional day in some ways. First, let it be said that I. got good sleep the night before which always bodes well the next day. Which is why I am such a sleep nazi. Yeah, that's right I said it. I am very protective of her sleep because the next day I will be dealing with either the Angel I. or the Devil I. Let's look at some of the differences:

Angel I. rolls with the punches, is cheerful, happy, funny, does not talk back, whines very little, makes things for her mommy all morning, gives physical and verbal affection to her mommy all day, cleans her room all by herself without any prompting from me just to make her mommy smile!

Devil I. doesn't want to do anything we have planned for the day and verbally lets me know, talks back about everything under the sun, has a negative, bad attitude, throws tantrums, and when she is really out of control angry at me has been known to spit in my face.

Need I explain more as to why one of my top 3 daily priorities is getting I. in bed on time? So for all the people around me who shake their heads, roll their eyes, and wonder aloud how I am depriving I. of organized activities in the late afternoon - BITE ME! I suspect that getting spat at in her face would cure all your head shaking real quick!

Back to my original point of how I.'s good night of sleep led to an exceptional day...we went to the Wild Animal Park and had a great time together. Beautiful, cool weather, we walked (well I walked, she rode) and talked as we had lunch, fed the lorikeets and deer, saw the baby elephant born the night before, and enjoyed the butterfly exhibit. Even with all that fun, it was a productive day complete with grocery store shopping and getting all the laundry folded and away instead of it sitting in the basket taunting me for several days.

Good thing it was a relaxing day yesterday because today is a "balls to the wall" kind of day as I delicately put it. Run to the gym this morning, get home, make lunch, get I. to preschool, go directly to physical therapy, make a business call in the car before picking I. up, then to the chiropractor (I'm old okay?), home to make I.'s dinner, bath, bed, and then the big C-O-L-L-A-P-S-E.

At least I know that dinner is taken care of since I'm eating through the leftovers in the fridge and freezer. I know that doesn't sound particularly appetizing but they all taste good, I don't have to cook anything, and I'm making room in the fridge and freezer. Plus, think of all that money I'm saving. Almost pays for the Absolut bottles in the freezer....

A Really Good Day

A good day today for us! For the past couple of months, I've been craving breakfast at a specific restaurant but would always find reasons why I "shouldn't" go. But this morning, I was really craving it and in keeping with my current philosophy of "do it now", I. and I went and had breakfast out on a Saturday morning. Boy did it ever hit the spot and it put me in a good mood to do something pleasurable for the heck of it and have it be out of our normal routine. After satisfying that craving, we went straight to the gym to hopefully neutralize some of the dietary damage that was done.

After resttime, I decided that we would still go out for our usual Saturday linner despite eating out for breakfast. That would have been a definite "should not" before but I figured I would break the rules this once and I'm so glad I did because something unexpected happened that a couple of different things put into motion.

First, I bent my rule of no more than 1 meal out a day. Secondly, when we were driving by On the Border yesterday, I. asked what kind of food was at that restaurant and when I told her Mexican, she said she wanted to eat there on Saturday, as opposed to our El Torito tradition. So this afternoon, we went there and sat in a booth in the back of the bar area (nice and loud in there with lots of activity to keep I. entertained). We had been there about 15 minutes or so when I looked to my left and there was one of the waiters waiting for his drink orders. I couldn't see his face, just his hair but for some reason I kept looking long enough for him to lean back and OH MY GOSH - IT WAS LUIS - our waiter from El Torito who was like family (see http://feistymommy.blogspot.com/2008/11/catching-up-from-thanksgiving.html ). He's been "our" waiter since before V. and I were married for crying out loud. We had I.'s 3rd birthday celebration there because of him! So we talked and laughed and I felt so happy because we found him again and better yet, he's just down the street from us. The only sad part, which will work itself out in time, is that even though I. did remember him, it's been exactly a year since she last saw him so she was acting shy, uncertain, and refused to smile at him. But, like I said, that'll work itself out. You can be sure that when V. is gone in Saudi Arabia, we will be having our linners there so that we will be taken especially good care of by a newly found friend!
